A Long-Lasting Mode Water Vortex in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Reverdin, Gilles; Gascard, Jean-claude; Le Cann, Bernard; Prieur, Loic; Assenbaum, Michel; Lherminier, Pascale.
An anticyclonic mode water vortex and its environment were investigated from November 2000 to September 2001 in the northeast Atlantic (near 43.5 degrees N, 15 degrees-19 degrees W) with neutrally buoyant drifting floats, moored current meters, satellite altimetric sea surface height, and several hydrological surveys and sections. These observations reveal a coherent inner core (similar to 0 km in diameter) made of very oxygenated northeast Atlantic central waters (11 degrees-12.7 degrees C and 35.5-35.7 on the 1978 practical salinity scale) from 150 m down to about 750-m depth. The core presents high relative vorticity (up to approximately -0.5 times the Coriolis frequency f) within at least 10 km of its center, near 400-700 m. Peak velocity along the...

A New Platform for the Determination of Air–Sea Fluxes (OCARINA): Overview and First Results ArchiMer
Bourras, D.; Branger, H.; Reverdin, Gilles; Marie, Louis; Cambra, R.; Baggio, L.; Caudoux, C.; Caudal, G.; Morisset, S.; Geyskens, N.; Weill, Alain; Hauser, D..
The present paper describes a new type of floating platform that was specifically designed for estimating air–sea fluxes, investigating turbulence characteristics in the atmospheric surface boundary layer, and studying wind–wave interactions. With its design, it can be deployed in the open ocean or in shallow-water areas. The system is designed to be used from a research vessel. It can operate for ~10 h as a drifting wave rider and 3 h under power. Turbulence and meteorological instrument packages are placed at a low altitude (1–1.5 m). It was deployed for validation purposes during the Front de Marée, Variabilité (FROMVAR), 2011 experiment off the west coast of Brittany, France. Wind friction velocity and surface turbulent buoyancy flux were estimated...

Air-Sea Turbulent Fluxes From a Wave-Following Platform During Six Experiments at Sea ArchiMer
Bourras, Denis; Cambra, Remi; Marié, Louis; Bouin, Marie-noëlle; Baggio, Lucio; Branger, Hubert; Beghoura, Houda; Reverdin, Gilles; Dewitte, Boris; Paulmier, Aurélien; Maes, Christophe; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Pairaud, Ivane; Fraunié, Philippe; Luneau, Christopher; Hauser, Danièle.
Turbulent fluxes at the air‐sea interface are estimated with data collected in 2011 to 2017 with a low‐profile platform during six experiments in four regions. The observations were carried out with moderate winds (2‐10 m s‐1) and averaged wave heights of 1.5 m. Most of the time, there was a swell, with an averaged wave age (the ratio between wave phase speed and wind speed) being equal to 2.8±1.6. Three flux calculation methods are used, namely the eddy‐covariance (EC), the inertial‐dissipation (ID), and the bulk methods. For the EC method, a spectral technique is proposed to correct wind data from platform motion. A mean bias affecting the friction velocity (u*) is then evaluated. The comparison between EC u* and ID u* estimates suggests that a constant...

The "Cooperative Airborne Radiometer for Ocean and Land Studies" (CAROLS) L-Band radiometer was designed and built as a copy of the EMIRAD II radiometer constructed by the Technical University of Denmark team. It is a fully polarimetric and direct sampling correlation radiometer. It is installed on board a dedicated French ATR42 research aircraft, in conjunction with other airborne instruments (C-Band scatterometer-STORM, the GOLD-RTR GPS system, the infrared CIMEL radiometer and a visible wavelength camera). Following initial laboratory qualifications, three airborne campaigns involving 21 flights were carried out over South West France, the Valencia site and the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) in 2007, 2008 and 2009, in coordination with in situ field...

Collecting and gridding complementary in-situ SST/SSS data for the calibration and validation of SMOS ArchiMer
Brion, Emilie; Gaillard, Fabienne; Petit De La Villeon, Loic; Delcroix, Thierry; Alory, Gael; Reverdin, Gilles.
Providing reliable in-situ surface temperature and salinity data over the global ocean within short delay is critical for the calibration and validation of the recently launched Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity Satellite (SMOS). The work presented here has been undertaken as a contribution to GLOSCAL (Global Ocean Surface Salinity Calibration and Validation), retained as one of the ESA CalVal Projects. Based on the Coriolis datasets and using In Situ Analysis System (ISAS) tool, a near real time analysis system has been developed. It provides gridded fields of sea surface salinity and temperature and the corresponding in-situ dataset. In addition to research activities, these products would be used to help the quality control of SMOS satellite data, and to...

The water vapour isotopic composition ( (H2O)-H-1-O-16, (H2O)-O-18 and (HHO)-H-1-H-2-O-16) of the Atlantic marine boundary layer has been measured from 5 research vessels between 2012 and 2015. Using laser spectroscopy analysers, measurements have been carried out continuously on samples collected 10-20 meter above sea level. All the datasets have been carefully calibrated against the international VSMOW-SLAP scale following the same protocol to build a homogeneous dataset covering the Atlantic Ocean between 4 degrees S to 63 degrees N. In addition, standard meteorological variables have been measured continuously, including sea surface temperatures using calibrated Thermo-Salinograph for most cruises. All calibrated observations are provided with...

Deep Currents in the Rift Valley of the North Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer
Lahaye, Noe; Gula, Jonathan; Thurnherr, Andreas M.; Reverdin, Gilles; Bouruet-aubertot, Pascale; Roullet, Guillaume.
Over mid-ocean ridges, the interaction between the currents and the topography gives rise to complex flows, which drive the transport properties of biogeochemical constituents, and especially those associated with hydrothermal vents, thus impacting associated ecosystems. This paper describes the circulation in the rift valley along the Azores sector of the North Mid-Atlantic Ridge, using a combination of in-situ data from several surveys and realistic high-resolution modeling. It confirms the presence of a mean deep current with an up-valley branch intensified along the right inner flank of the valley (looking downstream), and a weaker down-valley branch flowing at shallower depth along the opposite flank. The hydrographic properties of the rift-valley...

Dissolved Fe (DFe) samples from the GEOVIDE voyage (GEOTRACES GA01, May–June 2014) in the North Atlantic Ocean were analysed using a SeaFAST-picoTM coupled to an Element XR HR-ICP-MS and provided interesting insights on the Fe sources in this area. Overall, DFe concentrations ranged from 0.09 ± 0.01 nmol L−1 to 7.8 ± 0.5 nmol L−1. Elevated DFe concentrations were observed above the Iberian, Greenland and Newfoundland Margins likely due to riverine inputs from the Tagus River, meteoric water inputs and sedimentary inputs. Air-sea interactions were suspected to be responsible for the increase in DFe concentrations within subsurface waters of the Irminger Sea due to deep convection occurring the previous winter, that provided iron-to-nitrate ratios sufficient...

Enhanced Turbulence Associated with the Diurnal Jet in the Ocean Surface Boundary Layer ArchiMer
Sutherland, Graig; Marie, Louis; Reverdin, Gilles; Christensen, Kai H.; Brostrtom, Goran; Ward, Brian.
Detailed observations of the diurnal jet, a surface intensification of the wind-driven current associated with the diurnal cycle of sea surface temperature (SST), were obtained during August and September 2012 in the subtropical Atlantic. Adiurnal increase in SST of 0.2 degrees to 0.5 degrees C was observed, which corresponded to a diurnal jet of 0.15 m s(-1). The increase in near-surface stratification limits the vertical diffusion of the wind stress, which in turn increases the near-surface shear. While the stratification decreased the turbulent dissipation rate epsilon below the depth of the diurnal jet, there was an observed increase in epsilon within the diurnal jet. The diurnal jet was observed to increase the near-surface shear by a factor of 5,...

Over the last decade, several hundred seals have been equipped with conductivity-temperature-depth sensors in the Southern Ocean for both biological and physical oceanographic studies. A calibrated collection of seal-derived hydrographic data is now available, consisting of more than 165,000 profiles. The value of these hydrographic data within the existing Southern Ocean observing system is demonstrated herein by conducting two state estimation experiments, differing only in the use or not of seal data to constrain the system. Including seal-derived data substantially modifies the estimated surface mixed-layer properties and circulation patterns within and south of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Agreement with independent satellite observations of sea...

The science guiding the \EURECA campaign and its measurements are presented. \EURECA comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic — eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, \EURECA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or, or the life-cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly four hundred...

Interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere occur at the air-sea interface through the transfer of momentum, heat, gases and particulate matter, and through the impact of the upper-ocean biology on the composition and radiative properties of this boundary layer. The Tara Pacific expedition, launched in May 2016 aboard the schooner Tara, was a 29-month exploration with the dual goals to study the ecology of reef ecosystems along ecological gradients in the Pacific Ocean and to assess inter-island and open ocean surface plankton and neuston community structures. In addition, key atmospheric properties were measured to study links between the two boundary layer properties. A major challenge for the open ocean sampling was the lack of ship-time available...
